In-Cinema Food Ban Hits France, Canada

France is set to ban consuming food and drink in cinemas for three weeks starting on January 3rd. The measure is one of several being introduced to combat the spread of the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus.

France recorded 100,000 new COVID cases on Christmas Day, but has stopped short of a lockdown or adding curfews like some other countries across the continent have. Others, like Denmark and The Netherlands, have shut all cinemas until mid-January.

Currently a ‘health pass’ is necessary to attend cinemas in France, but a potential measure coming in mid-January will require people to be fully vaccinated to access cinemas.

The news comes as a new wave of movie theatre closures and restrictions has rippled through Canada’s exhibition sector with cinemas shutting down in Quebec. In Ontario, cinemas are staying open but cinemagoers will continue to mask up in theaters and no food or drink is allowed.
