IMAX Buys Streaming Video Optimising Tech

IMAX is getting into the world of streaming by acquiring the Canadian tech start-up firm SSIMWAVE in a deal said to be worth $20-24 million.

SSIMWAVE is behind a streaming technology that optimises and maximizes video and audio quality of a stream across multiple platforms from phones to tablets, laptops and TVs to more interactive devices like VR and AR.

Imax CEO Richard Gelfond says the acquisition will allow his company to deliver the highest quality video images on any screen and device with different bandwidths outside the traditional giant screen theatrical market.

The SIMMWAVE AI software recognizes which device or platform a consumer is on and maximizes the viewing experience accordingly. In addition, the software is based on real data from real people on what excellent viewing quality should be, as opposed to one determined by a machine.

IMAX will continue to offer the tech to existing streaming clients like Disney+, HBO Max, Paramount+ and Comcast for live broadcasting and more clients.
