The trailers for “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” show off a scene with Rebecca Ferguson’s Ilsa Faust character sporting an eye patch whilst lining up a sniper-style shot in a desert location.
There’s been a bit of confusion about said eye patch – the immediate speculation was she gets partly blinded at some time during the movie, but the patch doesn’t appear in any other scenes in the trailer.
In fact, the patch reportedly is never actually explained in its brief appearance in the film. So why is it there? Turns out the reason isn’t a storytelling one, rather it was to overcome a practical problem on the day of filming that sequence.
Speaking with Hey U Guys, Ferguson explained the reason for its inclusion:
“You’d think that the reason for the eye patch is a cool one. It is not, alas… It’s because I can’t f—ing wink. He lined up the shot, I took it, I was ready, I was breathing, and he goes, ‘Now close your eye,’ and I went [makes funny face attempting to wink]. He went, ‘No, close the one eye. Okay, other shot. Other angle. Close the eye.’ [Makes funny face again] ‘Can we get an eyepatch? Anyone?’ There’s nothing more to it than that.”
The comments come as the film’s director Christopher McQuarrie has also spoken about the film’s approach to safety. In a chat with Collider, he says a mantra they say on set is: “Don’t be careful, be competent.” Another critical thing is the way they approach the question of what if something looks wrong:
“The other thing that’s really critical whenever we’re doing it is I deputize the crew down to camera operators, focus pullers, anyone can yell, ‘cut’. If you see something wrong, you can stop the movie, it’s not worth doing.
And we don’t want a culture where people are thinking, ‘I felt something was wrong, but I didn’t think it was my place to say’. So there’s a huge bubble that everybody is participating in, that everybody is aware of, just to make those things safer… Just safety, safety, safety.”
A new clip is also out of Lorne Balfe conducting music for the film’s score. “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” is set to hit cinemas on July 12th.
Less than a week until @missionfilm and the soundtrack is released.
