Hulu Pulls “Golden Girls” Episode Over Joke

Hulu has removed an episode of sitcom classic “The Golden Girls” containing a scene with characters with mud packs on their faces.

The third season episode, titled “Mixed Feelings” sees Michael (Scott Jacoby), the son of Dorothy (Beatrice Author), planning to wed much older black woman Lorraine (Rosalind Cash). Dorothy is critical of their age difference, while Lorraine’s family disapproves of their daughter marrying a white man.

As Lorraine’s family arrives, Rose (Betty White) and Blanche (Rue McClanahan) are testing out a new mud face treatment and greet the family with their masks still on, saying to them “This is mud on our faces, we’re not really Black.”

The episode is all about skewering pre-conceived notions. Another scene sees Sophia asking Lorraine’s family “Is it true what they say about black men in bed?”. Dorothy admonishes her mother for believing a stereotype, but one of the in-laws replies: “Call it what you want, honey. I’m just glad it’s true.”

The removal follows in the wake of numerous other shows seeing select episodes pulled from their line-up including “30 Rock,” “The Office,” “Community,” “Scrubs” and more.
