Universal Pictures

Hulu has ordered eight episodes of a limited series about Sammy Davis, Jr. from “Empire” creator Lee Daniels and 20th Television.

The project will be based on Wil Haygood’s book and stars Elijah Kelley (“Star”) as Davis Jr. along with having Daniels directing the first two episodes.

The series follows Davis Jr.’s rise from childhood stardom on the vaudeville stage to become one of the most famous African American entertainers of the 1950s and 1960s.

At the same time he was surrounded by controversy and ridicule over his affairs, his substance abuse problems, his conversion to Judaism, and his closeness to the Kennedys.

No production start dates have yet been set.
