Hulu has cancelled its acclaimed Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult-led period comedy series “The Great” after three seasons.
Created, written and executive produced by Tony McNamara, the show dealt with the life of Catherine the Great – Russia’s reigning empress from 1762 to 1796.
In the series, she’s an idealistic young girl who arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter. She finds a dangerous, depraved world that she resolves to change.
The third season was released on May 12th and revolved around Catherine (Fanning) and Nicholas (Hoult) working on their marriage after Catherine previously had his friends imprisoned and attempted to murder him.
Catherine meanwhile struggles to win the favor of the Russian people, and Peter deals with visions of his late father (Jason Isaacs).
Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Bayo Gbadamosi and Belinda Bromilow co-starred.
The reasoning for the cancellation is unclear, and a spokesperson for Hulu declined comment.
