Ron Howard’s “Thirteen Lives,” originally targeting a November 18th theatrical release via MGM, is now going to Amazon Prime Video.

The film is based on the real-life global news-making story of the rescue of twelve boys and their soccer coach who were trapped inside a flooding cave system in Thailand for eighteen days in 2018.

As Amazon takes over ownership of MGM, the streamer will give the project a limited theatrical release followed in quick succession by a Prime Video premiere in August.

Colin Farrell and Viggo Mortensen play divers who were part of the rescue mission that found all thirteen people alive. Paul Gleeson, Tom Bateman, Joel Edgerton and Craig Challen play other members of the mission.

All of the boys were rescued from the cave in an effort that involved more than 10,000 people from all around the world. Howard directs from a script by William Nicholson.

Two other MGM titles – Billy Porter’s directorial debut “Anything’s Possible” and Julius Avery’s “Samaritan” starring Sylvester Stallone – are also expected to adopt similar revamped release plans.
