How Garland Landed The “Elden Ring” Film

Filmmaker Alex Garland (“Warfare,” “Ex Machina”) appears to have really pushed hard to land the directing gig for the film adaptation of FromSoftware’s hit game “Elden Ring” at A24.

In a new report by The New Yorker, Garland revealed that he had completed an ‘epic’ 160-page draft – with 40 additional pages of imagery – as a script on-spec.

He then personally flew to Japan to pitch the game’s creator, Hidetaka Miyazaki, in a meeting that seemed to go well and led to Garland landing the seal of approval to adapt the work.

Kit Connor (“Warfare,” “Heartstopper”) is said to be in talks for a lead role with Ben Whishaw (“Skyfall”) and Cailee Spaeny (“Alien: Romulus”) also up for parts.

The piece also indicates that A24 asked legendary game creator Hideo Kojima is he wanted to direct the film version of his video game series “Death Stranding”. Kojima declined.

The game is set in a world called The Lands Between. Players take on the role of one of the Tarnished, individuals whose ancestors were exiled years ago. When the Elden Ring is shattered, they get the chance to return and conquer the land they were once banished from.

Created in collaboration with “Game of Thrones” author George R. R. Martin, the game was a massive hit and reportedly shipped over 30 million copies since its launch back in 2022 where it took Game of the Year at the Game Awards.
