Developer Guerrilla Games has revealed that last year’s “Horizon: Forbidden West,” the sequel to 2017’s “Horizon: Zero Dawn,” has sold 8.4 million copies to consumers as of mid-April this year – 14 months since it launched.
In comparison, its predecessor reportedly sold around 7.6 million copies by the 12-month mark, suggesting the sequel is selling about on par. Also revealed is that the ‘Horizon’ franchise has had lifetime sales of 32.7 million units up to mid-April this year.
Though not mentioned in the results, it’s thought PC sales of ‘Zero Dawn’ account for somewhere around 10-15% of that total figure – at the last report, the PC version of the game had sold 2.4 million copies in its first 19 months of release (it has now been out on that platform for 31 months).
The company also indicates millions more have played ‘Horizon’ titles via subscription services like PlayStation Plus. A PS5-only expansion for ‘Forbidden West’ titled ‘Burning Shores’ launched last month, whilst a “Horizon” VR game was released in February.
In a posting on PlayStation Blog, studio director Jan-Bart van Beek also confirms that “Aloy’s adventures will continue” and that they “can’t wait for you to find out where she’ll go next.”
Guerrilla revealed back in December that it was planning to expand the franchise with an online co-op project boasting “a new cast of characters and a unique stylized look”.
They added at the time they will continue to make “epic solo adventures” starring Aloy, seemingly confirming a trilogy closing game is on the way in a few year’s time.
In addition, Netflix is developing a Netflix series that hails from “Umbrella Academy” director Steve Blackman.
