The upcoming action-comedy sequel “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” is headed for the top of the box-office with projections pegging the film to make around $15 million through Sunday. The film has already snagged $3.9 million from its Wednesday debut plus sneak peeks last weekend.
The exclusively theatrical release marks one of the few comedies to be released on the big screen since the onset of COVID-19. Costing a little over $50 million to make, reviews for the film are disastrous with a woeful 26% on Rotten Tomatoes – down from 43% for the first film.
Patrick Hughes directed the film which sees Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson and Salma Hayek return and end up in a race to stop a madman (Antonio Banderas) from collapsing the European economy. Frank Grillo also stars.
Last week’s openers “In the Heights” and “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway” will also be closely watched in the hopes they have some holding power in the wake of soft debuts.
