The announcement of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” the other month has renewed interest in seeing more of Henry Cavill as Superman, a role the actor has played three times on screen so far with the last being that team-up film in 2017.
Cavill has previously expressed a desire to return to the role, but Warners and DC’s plan for the character have been unclear so far. There have been rumors of his being replaced, Warners shifting focus to a “Supergirl” spin-off and more, but nothing has been confirmed or held any real traction.
Speaking to Variety this week, Cavill was asked straight about his potential return to that particular superhero universe. He responded:
“[The rumors] get wilder and wilder by the day. The amount of speculation, the stuff I read on the Internet, is extraordinary and sometimes frustrating. It’s when you see people stating stuff as fact. Like, ‘No, that’s not the case. That hasn’t happened, and that conversation isn’t happening.’
But the important thing is that people are excited about it, and I think it’s important to be excited about a character like Superman. Superman is a fantastic character. If people are chatting about it, and even if they’re making stuff up, it’s okay, because that means they want to see the character again. And in an ideal world, I would absolutely love to play the character again.”
Recent talk has suggested that Cavill will return, but in a supporting capacity in another film, however this would seem to shoot that down. Cavill meanwhile will be busy with the second season of Netflix’s “The Witcher” which is set to resume production next month.
