Following reports of his involvement, actor Henry Cavill has confirmed yesterday’s report that he has signed on to star in and executive produce an Amazon TV series adaptation of the “Warhammer 40,000” franchise.

Cavill made the announcement hot on the heels of confirmation this week that he’s no longer going to be playing Superman on the big screen for Warner Bros. Pictures and DC who are going in a new direction.

It was also confirmed that he won’t be returning to the role of Geralt of Rivia for the fourth season of Netflix’s fantasy drama “The Witcher,” despite fan pleas for him to do so.

No writers or showrunners have yet been attached to the “Warhammer” series, beyond Vertigo Entertainment also hopping onboard to produce. Vertigo’s VP of television Natalie Viscuso says in her own post that she will be “building a cinematic universe with Henry, our team at Amazon, and the empire that is Games Workshop.”

Warhammer 40,000 is the most popular miniature wargame in the world and has spawned a large amount of spin-off media including board games and video games. The story of the franchise unfolds in the distant future, where a stagnant human civilization is beset by hostile aliens and supernatural creatures.

Cavill has long been a passionate fan of the vastly expansive Warhammer universe and in his posting says:

“For 30 years I have dreamt of seeing a Warhammer universe in live action… Having a home like Amazon will give us the freedom to be true to the massive scope of Warhammer. To all of you Warhammer fans out there, I promise to respect this IP that we love. I promise to bring you something familiar. And I endeavour to bring you something fantastic that is, as of yet, unseen.”

He then confirms the first step is to find a filmmaker/creator/writer to steer the ship of the series which is still in the development stage and likely not Cavill’s next project.
