Hemsworth, Weaver To Voice NatGeo Specials

National Geographic is lining up a hell of a line-up of people to work for them in coming months.

“Avengers” star Chris Hemsworth will headline a special for the 2021 edition of the channel’s annual Sharkfest summer programming block next year.

“Shark Beach” will see Hemsworth consulting with marine biologists, surfers, conservationists and shark advocates in Australia to uncover the reasons behind increased numbers of shark attacks there in recent years and figure out ways for humans and sharks to coexist.

Hemsworth will dive with different shark species to understand their behaviors; join local biologists to explore preventative measures to stave off shark-human encounters; and showcase innovations in technology designed to protect both sharks and people.

That’s not all though. Sigourney Weaver will re-team with her “Aliens” and “Avatar” director James Cameron for the four-part event series “Secrets of the Whales”. Weaver narrates and Cameron executive produces the series which chronicles the whale way of life.

Filmed across three years in 24 locations, the series is a personal saga, venturing deep into the world of whales to experience the extraordinary communication skills and intricate social structures of five different whale species. The series is set to premiere globally on Nat Geo on Earth Day, April 22nd 2021.

Finally, NatGeo has also acquired the docuseries City So Real directed by two-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker Steve James (“Hoop Dreams”). The series paints a portrait of contemporary Chicago as it gives a multifaceted look into its soul, set against the backdrop of its history-making 2019 mayoral election. That will debut this Fall.
