Paramount Pictures’ video game adaptation “Sonic the Hedgehog” has managed to beat 20th Century Studios’ new adaptation of Jack London’s “The Call of the Wild” at the box-office over the weekend.
“Sonic” is set to take $26.3 million for the three-day, racing just ahead of the Harrison Ford and CG dog film’s $25 million debut. ‘Sonic’ has crossed the $100 million mark in North America and $200 million globally, a surprise box-office hit which overcame its early marketing blunder to deliver good money and solid reviews.
The new “Call of the Wild” had mixed reviews, and is saddled with a costly $125 million budget, meaning it will have to do well globally. Unfortunately, its overseas debut was soft with $15.4 million outside North America this weekend.
“Birds of Prey” will come in third with $7 million and has so far earned $72 million in North America and $101.2 million internationally. The supernatural thriller sequel “Brahms: The Boy II” generated $6 million, which matched expectations. Budgeted at $10 million, it should do well enough to be profitable.
“Bad Boys for Life” rounds out the top five with $6 million in its sixth weekend. “Parasite” keeps drawing crowds too, pulling in $3.1 million this weekend.
In limited release, the new adaptation of “Emma” opened on five screens with a strong $46,000 per-screen average while the Kristen Stewart-led “Seberg” snagged $20,162 per screen.
