HBO has opted to pass on doing a second season of its Ben Mendelsohn and Cynthia Erivo-led adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Outsider”.
The project was initially optioned as a miniseries by Media Rights Capital, though talks of a second season were softly underway following the horror mystery drama’s solid response from critics along with strong ratings.
The passing is a surprise as the first season grew as time went on – the finale garnering 2.2 million viewers across all platforms, up by 1 million from the series premiere and the largest debut to finale boost for any first season HBO series.
Production company MRC are shopping it around to other networks and streaming platforms with several scripts already written for the second season.
An HBO spokesperson in a statement indicates the have no plans to block them from doing that: “We enjoyed our collaboration with Richard, Jason, Andrew, and the MRC team, and we wish them well in continuing the world created by the brilliant Stephen King.”
