HBO will reportedly lose up to five million of its subscribers through Amazon Prime Video’s channels platform from September 15th.
In messages sent to subscribers earlier this month, Amazon indicated HBO subscriptions made through an Amazon Prime Video account will be canceled on September 15th – users will get a pro-rated refund based on their last billing cycle.
Previously, Prime users were able to individually subscribe to HBO via the channels platform for $15 a month. The short-term loss aims to cut out the middle man and give HBO Max a direct relationship with consumers instead.
HBO Max will now be available to access as a standalone app on Amazon Fire TV devices, and anyone who purchased an HBO subscription through the channels platform can have their HBO Max access rolled over for no additional cost.
