HBO Plans “Harry Potter” Series Reboot

Warner Bros. Pictures

In a surprise report from Bloomberg no less, the publication is announcing that HBO is close to a deal for a TV series based on J.K. Rowling’s best-selling “Harry Potter” books for both cable and streaming.

Each season of the series will reportedly be based on one of the books according to their source. As a result, the series has plenty of time to expand on scenes, lore and other elements the films didn’t get the time to explore.

The outlet indicates the news is expected to be announced next week by Warner Bros. Discovery Inc. and will be a key part of the company’s new streaming strategy with CEO David Zaslav and HBO chief Casey Bloys having seemingly convinced Rowling to produce a new series.

Warner Bros. Discovery has certainly shown an eagerness to do more with the property despite the failure of the “Fantastic Beasts” spin-off franchise. Rowling will reportedly be involved in the series to ensure it remains loyal to her original material but will not showrun or serve as the primary creator.

Warner Bros. Discovery is also preparing to announce a new streaming strategy, including the new name for its flagship online service that will replace the HBO Max brand

Most recently Avalanche Software and Warner Bros. published the highly anticipated “Hogwarts Legacy” role-playing video game in February, which was a massive hit. The book series has sold 600 million copies, whilst the eight films based directly on the series generated more than $7.7 billion in global ticket sales.
