A second “Game of Thrones” prequel series, this one revolving around Aegon Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros, is in active discussions at HBO according to Variety.
The project is in very early stages and no writer is currently attached, but sources for the trade say a search is underway as HBO is keen to move forward and get the series into development.
In addition, the project may have a feature film component as HBO and Warner Bros. Pictures would produce a film that would then lead into the potential series. That plan, however, is not certain at this point.
The series tells how Aegon and his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, used their army and three dragons to conquer six of the seven kingdoms of Westeros – the notable lone exception being Dorne.
Aegon I became the first king of Westeros, the first to sit on the Iron Throne, and the founder of the Targaryen Dynasty. Events of the series take place approximately 300 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” and at least 100 years prior to that of “House of the Dragon”.
This marks the latest spin-off of ‘Thrones’ planned by HBO, who developed several series set in the world created by author George R.R. Martin. Only one of them, “House of the Dragon,” has made it to series thus far with a second season of that show in production. An abandoned pilot titled “The Long Night” was shot but scrapped in 2019.
