HBO is set to overhaul its well into production music-industry drama series “The Idol” that hails from famed musician The Weeknd (aka. Abel Tesfaye) and “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson.

The network says it will “evolve” its creative vision for the show, which would be the singer’s first major on-screen acting role, and so are making changes to key cast and crew. The series has already been filming for the last few months making this an unusual move.

The story was to follow a female pop singer who starts a romance with an enigmatic L.A. club owner who is the leader of a secret cult. The Weeknd was originally set to co-write and executive produce the series, whilst Joseph Epstein was set to serve as showrunner and writer.

In a statement, an HBO spokeswoman says: “The Idol’s creative team continues to build, refine, and evolve their vision for the show and they have aligned on a new creative direction. The production will be adjusting its cast and crew accordingly to best serve this new approach to the series. We look forward to sharing more information soon.”

Amy Seimetz (“Atlanta”) was on board to direct all six episodes.
