HBO Orders Superhero Satire “Franchise”

HBO

HBO has picked up the comedy “The Franchise” to series, according to a press release today from Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President of HBO Programming and Head of HBO & Max Comedy Series.

In the series, the crew of an unloved franchise movie fight for their place in a savage and unruly cinematic universe.

The show shines a light on the secret chaos inside the world of superhero moviemaking, to ask the question – how exactly does the cinematic sausage get made?

Himesh Patel, Aya Cash, Jessica Hynes, Billy Magnussen, Lolly Adefope, Darren Goldstein, Isaac Powell, Richard E. Grant, and Daniel Brühl co-star in the half-hour comedy series.

The project hails from “Skyfall” director Sam Mendes, “Veep” creator Armando Iannucci, and “Succession” writer/executive producer Jon Brown. Iannucci and Brown previously teamed on HBO’s space satire “Avenue 5” with Brown set to serve as showrunner here. Mendes directed the pilot and all three executive produce.

Gravitt says: “With a deft touch only he can bring, Sam has brilliantly captured the romance and the reality of filmmaking today. Jon is superb at sending up worlds we think we already know. Together, with Armando, they have delivered a truly hilarious comedy ensemble. I can’t wait to see more.”

Pippa Harris, Nicolas Brown, Julie Pastor and Jim Kleverweis also executive produce.
