AT&T have announced that WarnerMedia’s HBO Max has more than doubled the number of activations in the third quarter of this year to 8.6 million.
That means as of the end of September, HBO and HBO Max subscribers in the U.S. reached 38 million – exceeding the company’s initial year-end 36 million target. HBO revenues for the quarter were $1.8 billion.
Together, legacy HBO and HBO Max subscriptions topped 57 million worldwide, and WarnerMedia also confirms it’s still on track to launch an advertising-supported version of HBO Max in 2021.
The success offsets a 28% drop in sales for the Warner Bros. group to $2.4 billion, the studio continues to suffer effects from the COVID pandemic. Similarly AT&T’s DirecTV unit continues to bleed subscribers at a large rate with 627,000 cutting the cord this past quarter.
