HBO Max has reportedly passed “Overlook,” the J.J. Abrams-produced series that serves as a spin-off of Stephen King’s “The Shining”.
Warner Bros. Television, which is producing the series, is now shopping around the drama and is expected to land a new home soon with Netflix considered the frontrunner among several bidders for the series.
“Overlook” was one of the first three series Abrams and his Bad Robot banner set up at HBO Max under the production company’s $250 million overall deal with parent WarnerMedia. The other two are the Josh Holloway-led original series “Duster” and the DC Comics adaptation “Justice League Dark” (which has since spawned “Constantine” and “Madame X” series developments).
HBO Max previously announced all three series had received a production commitment but “Overlook” remained stuck in the development stages with a series commitment penalty. So if it doesn’t find a new home, Bad Robot will be financially compensated as if it had.
Abrams also has “Demimonde” and “Subject to Change” on the way with Abrams now set to direct the pilot for the former.
