Warner Bros. Discovery executives are close to formalizing a new name and platform for its soon-to-launch HBO Max and Discovery+ combined streaming service.
According to CNBC, the merged platform’s name is expected to be simply “Max” with legal vetting currently underway for it and a few other alternative names.
Executives haven’t finalized a decision, with some debate reportedly still going on at senior executive levels, but Max is the likely choice, according to the outlet’s sources.
The app itself is expected to share similarities with the Disney+ platform with WBD’s biggest brands as individual tiles – HBO, Discovery, DC Comics and Warner Bros. among them.
In November, Warner Bros. Discovery management pushed up the launch date for the combined service to spring 2023. The team has also been experimenting with changes “in large part to address some of the deficiencies of the existing platform”.
Currently, commercial-free monthly subscriptions to HBO Max and Discovery+ cost $14.99 and $6.99, respectively. Both also have cheaper ad-supported tiers.
