Hawke On Fourth “Before” Film Possibility

Hawke On Fourth Before Film Possibility
Sony Pictures Classics

In 1995 we got “Before Sunrise,” followed by 2004’s “Before Sunset” and 2013’s “Before Midnight” – a trilogy of postmodern romance films about two people (Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy) and all directed by Richard Linklater.

By that timeline then if a fourth film were to come, it should be arriving this year – however no such movie is in development even as those involved have considered the idea. Both of the sequels were written by Linklater, Hawke and Delpy working together.

Recently out doing press for Marvel’s “Moon Knight” series, Hawke spoke with GQ Magazine about a fourth film and seems to be still open about doing another one:

We constantly daydream about a possible right idea. Like, the reason why the first three happened so organically is we all mysteriously wanted to write the same movie. But we’ve never had the same idea. Ideas have been put forward – like, wow, what if Jesse and Céline were in quarantine. We put forward ideas like, what if something bad happened to one of us?”

From the sounds of it though nothing has come along so far that has gotten them excited to do one and the actor would be quite happy to leave things on the high note with which they finished:

“We’re so proud of them, to be honest, we really worked hard on them, and we feel like we don’t want to pour any water in the beer. You wouldn’t want to make a bad fourth one…There might be a moment to hit, you know, the last stage of life. That would be the time to find.”

Hawke remains in high demand these days. Along with “Moon Knight” arriving tonight on Disney+ he’ll be seen in Robert Eggers’ “The Northman,” Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out 2” and will voice Batman in the animated series “Batwheels”.
