Richard Linklater closed out his ‘Before’ trilogy with “Before Midnight” back in 2013, each of the films released approximately nine years after the earlier one – 1995, 2004, 2013.
That means if there were to be a possible fourth movie with stars Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, it should arrive in 2022 and so would likely need to shoot next year. That also means there has to be discussions about it this year.
Speaking with IndieWire recently, Ethan Hawke talked about his role in the series and confirmed that a fourth film is ‘still being talked about’ but that aforementioned release plan is out the window:
“If the first three were all nine years apart, the fourth would not follow that trajectory. Linklater would want a different path, either a short film set four years after ‘Midnight’ or a feature two decades in the future. We think about it.”
Hawke then added that any potential future installments would only happen if they can “make sure we have something to say.” He also says that he adores the three films so much that in order to revisit it “I would have to believe we could make something as good.”
