Gerard Butler is adamant that both a sequel to his “Heat”-lite clone “Den of Thieves,” and a fourth film in the “Has Fallen” franchise, are coming very soon.
Speaking with EW whilst out promoting the disaster film “Greenland,” the Scottish action star says he can’t wait to get back into his character of Mike Banning in the “Fallen” franchise because right now the world needs a man like that:
“I think with everything going on, we need him. He needs to come back… I think you will be seeing another. We’re toying away with another really fantastic idea that we’re working on at the moment that obviously we can’t say too much about.”
All three films in the series have been critically panned to date with the first, “Olympus Has Fallen,” scoring the best notices while the second “London Has Fallen” snagged the worst. The most recent entry, last year’s “Angel Has Fallen,” took in $147 million worldwide from a $40 million budget.
The “Den of Thieves” sequel meanwhile is shifting gears and will head to Europe. That project seems to be further along according to Butler:
“We’re working on that script at the moment, and I’m getting pages daily from [director Christian Gudegast]. It’s a fun ride, spreading across North America into Europe and the diamond district of Marseilles. It’s very cool and has a more European vibe this time. All the fun characters, Big Nick, Donnie, and Lobbin’ Bob, will be back. And I’m really excited about it.”
Butler will be back on screens in “Greenland” hitting theaters on August 14th. He’s also in pre-production on”Remote Control” in which he plays a corporate intelligence analyst trying to save the Chinese economy from a conspiracy, and “Kandahar” which is essentially “Extraction” with Butler rather than Chris Hemsworth.
