Harrison Ford will reach his 81st birthday in July, just days after the opening of his fifth and final outing as adventurer Indiana Jones in “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”.
Speaking with Esquire magazine recently, the actor touched upon doing stunts at his age, and how showing off the character’s age was a big part of the appeal of getting him back for this entry.
One of the film’s big set pieces incorporates a horse chase through the streets of New York City during a 1969 moon landing-themed ticker-tape parade.
Ford says he was filming the scene when, all of a sudden, he felt hands on him from below and looked down from where he was on horseback to see three stunt workers on the ground ready to help him off the horse:
“I thought, ‘What the f—?’ Like I was being attacked by gropers. I look down and there are three stunt guys there making sure I didn’t fall off the stirrup. They said, ‘Oh, we were just afraid because we thought, you know, and bah bah bah bah.’ And I said, ‘Leave me the f— alone… Leave me alone, I’m an old man getting off a horse and I want it to look like that!'”
Ford, of course. did end up injuring himself at a different point in the film’s making, tearing the subscapularis muscle off his right shoulder during a fight scene with co-star Mads Mikkelsen:
“Yeah, well, I’m also known for shutting movies down because I get hurt, which is not something you want to be known for. But hey, s— happens.”
Production on the film shut down for two weeks, and even then Ford had to sit out an additional six weeks.
Ford has been in Atlanta filming “Captain America: New World Order,” marking his first Marvel Studios film. Asked if that was a relatively easy and fun shoot, he said:
“Yeah. I mean, there are tough days and easy days and fun days and all kinds of days. It’s a tough schedule and, yeah, it’s fun. But it’s not a walk in the park. It’s not fun fun. It’s work.”
The interview also brought up a common question “Star Wars” fans ask him. which is who would win a fight: Han Solo or Indiana Jones. Ford says he has only one response to such a question:
“Well, they usually ask me, ‘If there was a fight between Han Solo and Indiana Jones, who would f—-n’ win?’ And I say [voice rising, fingers drumming], ‘Me, a——-! I don’t want to f——- make s— up like that. I mean, what are you asking me that crap for?’… I’m not Indiana Jones. I’m Harrison Ford — Harry Ford, in fact.”
