Madelaine Petsch, Froy Gutierrez and Gabriel Basso will star in a remake of the 2008 horror film “The Strangers” currently in the works at Lionsgate. Production is underway in Slovakia.
Filmmaker Renny Harlin is directing the film which is the first in a planned trilogy, and he’s locked in a deal to helm the next two.
Bryan Bertino wrote and directed the original, which starred Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman and was essentially a home invasion film. It became a sleeper hit for Universal, with a sequel arriving ten years later.
In the new film, Petsch’s character drives cross-country with her longtime boyfriend (Gutierrez) to begin a new life in the Pacific Northwest. When their car breaks down in Oregon, they’re forced to spend the night in a secluded Airbnb where they are terrorized from dusk till dawn by three masked strangers.
Lionsgate’s subsequent two films plan to expand the story in all new directions. Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland are penning the first film with Courtney Solomon, Mark Canton, Christopher Milburn, Gary Raskin, Charlie Dombeck and Alastair Birlingham producing.
