Jessica Rothe and Israel Broussard are set to reprise their lead roles from “Happy Death Day” in the film’s upcoming sequel which is set to begin production next week.
Following a wildly successful run which saw the first film earning $123 million worldwide from a production budget of $4.8 million, Blumhouse and Universal Pictures are racing forward with a follow-up to the film about a college student (Rothe) who slips into a horrific time loop as she relives the day of her murder with both its unexceptional details and terrifying end until she discovers her killer’s identity.
Suraj Sharma is also joining the cast as Samar Ghosh, a science enthusiast and geek who enjoys coding in his spare time. Sarah Yarkin is onboard as Dre Morgan, a science geek and tomboy with a sleepy feline gaze who is Samar’s partner-in-crime.
Christopher Landon will direct the film which will answer questions about the first film’s time loop, while Rothe has described the sequel as not only picking up right after the first but exploiting a “Back to the Future-like style” twist.
