Rising to fame penning multiple “Paranormal Activity” films and indie feature “Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse,” filmmaker Christopher Landon really broke through into the mainstream with the success of 2017’s “Happy Death Day”.
The slasher meets “Groundhog Day” comedy pulled in more than $125 million on a budget of less than $5 million and scored very good reviews, especially for its leading actress Jessica Rothe.
That film was followed by a more sci-fi toned sequel “Happy Death Day 2 U” in 2019 that was both odder and more sentimental. When it took in only half of its predecessor, plans for a third film were seemingly scrapped.
Currently out promoting his new Netflix film “We Have a Ghost,” Landon was asked by The Wrap about those scrapped plans which was for a much bigger film than the first two and would again change-up genres.
“I have to still keep it in my pocket on the off-chance … because here’s the thing, it’s not time-sensitive. You know what I mean? I could make that movie whenever if they allowed me to.
At some point, I’m just going to spill the beans. I had a full pitch. There was a whole movie that was ready to go in my brain. We’ll see what happens.
The third movie was going to be an epic apocalyptic adventure with some elements of horror. That was not getting left behind. But yeah, we were going to change gears again and it was going to be bigger.”
He adds the size and ambition “held us back a touch” as the concept is a “bigger, much bigger movie.” Landon is next attached to helm the “Arachnophobia” remake and has previously indicated he’s been in talks with spider-wranglers about the film.
