Hulu’s Emmy-winning adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel “The Handmaid’s Tale” has been renewed for a sixth and final season. The news comes one week before the ten-episode fifth season’s debut on September 14th.
Creator, showrunner and executive producer Bruce Miller tells THR he’s had a “very, very, very luxurious time” to plan out what happens at the end of the story and exactly how they’d like to get there.
As a result, the team is ending the show on its own terms, the tale closing out as Hulu’s next Atwood adaptation “The Testaments” – which is also set within the Gilead universe – is in the works.
“The Handmaid’s Tale” helped launched scripted originals at Hulu and became the first streaming show to win best drama at the Emmys in 2017.
