Chloe Zhao’s “Hamnet” has won the top prize of the People’s Choice Award at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Zhao is also the first director to win the award twice (she also won in 2020 for “Nomadland”).

The film, about the genesis of “Hamlet” following the death of Shakespeare’s young son, is now being pegged as arguably one of three serious Oscars contenders right now alongside “Sinners” and “One Battle After Another”.

Guillermo Del Toro’s “Frankenstein” and Rian Johnson’s “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery” took the runner up wins for that top award.

The People’s Choice International Award went to Park Chan-wook’s “No Other Choice” while Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value ” and Neeraj Ghaywan’s “Homebound” were the runners up.

The Midnight Madness Award went to “Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie” with “Obsession” and “The Furious” being the runners up.

Finally the People’s Choice Documentary award went to “The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue” with runners up being “EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert” and “You Had to Be There: How the Toronto Godspell Ignited the Comedy Revolution”.
