“Hamilton,” a feature-length recording of a 2016 performance of the stage musical from Lin-Manuel Miranda, has led to a spike in app downloads at the Disney+ streaming service.
The musical premiered on the service on Friday, July 3rd and analytics film Apptopia reports that, from Friday through Sunday, the app was downloaded 513,323 times globally including 266,084 times in the United States.
In the United States, the total Disney+ downloads were 72.4% higher than the average of the four weekends in June 2020 over comparable Fridays through Sundays. Worldwide, app downloads were 46.6% higher than the average.
The net subscriber gains are probably higher though as the analytics firm only counted mobile app signups, not those who signed up either directly through the service’s website or through smart TVs.
The film was originally going to hit cinemas late next year until Disney shifted the film to a direct-to-streaming release for this month.
