Miramax TV is reportedly developing a premium TV series version of Guy Ritchie’s recent gangster comedy “The Gentlemen”.
The project in fact started off as a TV series pitch before becoming a feature so this brings it back around. Ritchie will write and direct the series which he will executive produce alongside Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies.
Matthew McConaughey starred in the film as American expat Mickey Pearson who has built a highly profitable marijuana empire in London. When word gets out that he’s looking to cash out, all sorts of plots, schemes, bribery and blackmail takes place in an attempt to steal his domain out from under him.
Whilst Americans McConaughey and “Succession” award winner Jeremy Strong have roles, it’s the films supporting cast that scored raves from Charlie Hunnam as the dealer’s right hand man, Colin Farrell as a colorful tracksuited neighbourhood bruiser, Henry Golding as scion of a rival criminal empire, and Hugh Grant as a wonderfully sleazy tabloid journalist.
The film opened in January and grossed over $115 million at the worldwide box office. The TV series joins Miramax’s recently announced series adaptation of Guillermo del Toro’s “Mimic” though that project has Paul WS Anderson attached as director.
