Gunn & WB Consider “Superman” Spin-Offs

Warner Bros. Pictures

With “Superman” hitting cinemas this weekend, and armed with both good reviews and potential big box-office, Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios are already looking to the future.

A feature piece in The Wall Street Journal has gone into the $225 million budget film and its importance for the studio. They indicate the studio needs the film to gross $500 million globally to be considered a success internally at the studio.

The biggest reveal of the article is that Gunn is considering TV spinoffs for characters like Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi) and Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo) who steal their scenes in the film.

The piece also goes into WBD’s David Zaslav’s involvement with the franchise. Zaslav did have discussions with Dwayne Johnson about potentially fixing the DC. However those quickly went away after “Black Adam” proved such a flop for the studio.

He reportedly dismissed development of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ civil rights era-set black Superman project in 2022, the script dubbed ‘too woke’. However the piece says DC Studios chiefs Gunn and Safran could still try to make the movie in the future.

The full piece is up at The Wall Street Journal. It comes as film star David Corenswet has confirmed to Vanity Fair he’s under contract to do a “Superman” sequel.
