One of the most well-received elements of the recent “The Suicide Squad” trailer was that of the big screen arrival of DC Comics character King Shark.
The character has only appeared in live-action form before on “The Flash” as a giant muscular anthropomorphized shark with a sinister look. Gunn’s version is smaller, more compact and for lack of a better term more ‘cuddly’ despite eating a guy whole in his first scene.
Sylvester Stallone lends his voice to the character which seems to be trying to be this film’s Groot, but Gunn revealed on Twitter they deliberately tried to avoid making him too cute and Gunn insisted on giving him a ‘dad bod’ which would be key to his physicality: “I was insistent on the dad-bod from the beginning as I didn’t think King Shark would have such mammalian body structure.”
They also considered modelling him on a hammerhead shark-like in the comics, but ultimately went with more of a Great White because things got tricky: “I did tests with the hammerhead design, which I love & originally thought I’d use. But having eyes on the sides far apart made it incredibly awkward shooting interactions with other people. You couldn’t really see him looking at the other person & the shots tended to be too wide.”
“The Suicide Squad” is slated for a theatrical and HBO Max release on August 6th.
