For many years, one of the biggest complaints lobbed against DC Films as compared to Marvel Studios is that the company didn’t have a creative czar in the way Marvel has its Kevin Feige.
Sure there were various heads of the company, but they were more businessmen and behind-the-scenes types with no real singular figurehead who represented the brand beyond arguably filmmaker Zack Snyder who set up the DCU with “Man of Steel” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”.
That changed with the hiring of James Gunn and Peter Safran to Run the new DC Studios with the pair laying out a masterplan for the next ten years of DC films.
Duties between the two have been split, with Safran handling most of the administration work whilst Gunn deals with the creative side. Speaking with WIRED, Gunn explains how his role at DC is different from Feige’s Marvel:
“It’s actually a little different, I mean… Number one, DC Studios is a studio, so it’s a little bit different. Peter Safran [DC Studios co-CEO] does a lot of what Kevin Feige does. A lot of what I do is I just work on the creative side of things, so… Mapping out the stories and the creative side of the universe is my job, much more so than some of the more administrative/ executive type of stuff. Kevin has to do both.”
The new role puts Gunn in a more enviable position than even Feige who still has to handle the more corporate elements of the business, whilst Gunn is free to focus on crafting and honing the overall story of the new DC – starting with the “Creature Commandos” animated series late next year and “Superman: Legacy” launching in 2025.
