HBO Max’s “Peacemaker” closed out its second season last night, and with it has come some questions about where things go from here for the characters and the DCU overall.
SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “PEACEMAKER” SEASON 2 FINALE
Speaking about it with Deadline in a since deleted interview (still up at Yahoo), Gunn was asked if a third season of the series was planned to which he said:
“No, this is about the wider DCU and other stories in which this will play out right now. That doesn’t mean that there won’t be [a third season]. I don’t want to never say never, but right now, no, this is about the future of the DCU. It’s an important character.”
Then, on the Peacemaker: The Official Podcast, he says the series will return in some form but not necessarily as a third season: “Peacemaker will be back. As for this TV show, we’ll see exactly what form. We have plans. You’ll see all these characters in the future of the DCU in not too long.”
Two big elements of the finale is the creation of Checkmate with much of the core team of “Peacemaker,” and the existence of the planet Salvation being used by ARGUS as a prison. Gunn says Salvation is “where we’re sort of beginning our part of our larger story in the DCU here in this moment.”
As for Checkmate, which fans of the comics will be familiar with, Gunn says:
“You’ll definitely see Checkmate carrying through like they’re a thing now, so they’re a part of what’s going to happen, and I think they’re going to be really, really good at what they do. When we see them next, I think their circumstances will be a little bit different than the startup that they’re now.”
So titles like “Man of Tomorrow” and the “Waller” series could offer insight as to how Checkmate is going.
Finally, Gunn also revealed that the finale nearly had a surprise cameo from Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and he had spoken with Reynolds about such a DC-Marvel crossover. In that deleted interview, he said:
“I wanted them to open the door and see Deadpool in a room. I talked to Ryan Reynolds about it and we’d have had to go through some pretty, pretty big hoops to do that. He wanted to do it… That’s all anybody’s going to talk about now is f—— Deadpool in the other room.”
The Season 2 finale of “Peacemaker” is now up on HBO Max and the response so far has been fairly mixed.
