James Gunn is well aware of Marvel vs. DC tribalism that’s out there in fandom, but has been one of the few to be able jump between the two without issue either at a corporate or audience level.
The new co-head of DC Studios is currently out promoting Marvel Studios’ “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” which hit cinemas around the globe this weekend.
After that, he’ll continue to work on “Superman: Legacy” over at DC Studios, and confirmed in a tweet today that an actor from the ‘Guardians’ franchise will have a role in his new “Superman” film – but won’t elaborate in which actor or role.
Speaking with Yahoo Entertainment about the difficulty of juggling his Marvel press commitments with his creative DC commitments, he says he doesn’t find jumping between the two to be odd:
“It’s not odd. It isn’t odd at all, not to meI understand how it appears, but I’m just busy cause I’m working two jobs at one time. But it’s not odd.
People have this weird belief that Marvel and DC hate each other or somehow are polar opposites. But it’s just not the truth. I mean, listen, man, our job is the same. We want to get people into the theaters to see movies. That’s what matters.
And I think that we work together to do that. And the more good Marvel movies are, the better it is for DC movies. The more good DC movies, the better it is for Marvel movies.
There’s not only one winner. There can be two winners because it matters who goes to see your movies and who enjoys ’em.”
Gunn previously wrote that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was his first call when he landed the DC job.
Meanwhile The Wrap reports that Gunn turned in the first draft of “Superman: Legacy” last week, just days before the writer’s strike.
Casting on the project is now underway, and filming isn’t expected to be disrupted as the film won’t begin shooting until February next year, with pre-production having only just commenced.
