DC Studios co-chief James Gunn says that when it comes to the DC Universe’s take on Batman, he’s happy where things are presently.
Speaking with IGN on Friday, he says: “The Brave and the Bold script, I like where we are” but adds that things are still changing, including whether or not the key character of Bruce Wayne’s son Damian Wayne is even in the movie.
Back during the 2023 unveiling of the new DC Universe slate, Gunn called Damian Wayne his “favorite Robin”. The character is generally around 10 years old in the comics, while Batman/Bruce Wayne would be in his late 30s.
Will that be the case with casting Batman for the film then, is Gunn going for a specific age range? He says such factors aren’t set in stone yet:
“I think you have to wait to see the movie. Some things have changed. Plenty of things are in flux on what his situation is with his parentage and all that stuff, so I wouldn’t take any of it – Yeah, I mean, the actor who wants to… Listen, first of all, I can’t tell you the amount of big actors that have told me they want to be Batman. I think you’d have a harder time finding actors who don’t want to be Batman. He’s the one character everyone wants to play. That’s the truth”
The pressed for clarification as to whether Damian Wayne is still in the movie or not, Gunn responded: “I think you have to wait to see exactly what’s happening.”
Andy Muschietti has been linked as director, though DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran said earlier this year that it won’t be until the script is ready to go that they’ll show Muschietti and “see if it’s a fit for him.”
