Gunn Directing “Superman: Legacy” After All?

Warner Bros. Pictures

James Gunn may not only be writing the upcoming “Superman: Legacy,” it’s now looking like the DC Studios co-chief might be directing it as well.

‘Legacy’ marks the first effort in Gunn and DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran’s new initiative that is mapping out the course of the DC film and TV universe over the next decade.

As we know it will follow a younger Superman in his early days and at a point with Clark Kent early in his career – which is why Henry Cavill isn’t coming back to the role. Gunn has been working on the script for some time, well before the new slate was announced in late January.

Now in an interview with the YouTube channel Comic Pop Returns (via Collider), comics writer Tom King seemed fairly certain that Gunn is going to take the helm of the film. King also explains his own involvement in the new DC Studios slate:

“James Gunn is a super nerd and he’s super creative. He’s both the writer and director of the Superman movie, and he’s sort of the creative force behind all of this… and he reached out to a group of screenwriters and myself, fantastic, amazing whose names he’s put out there, and to work on making these movies and tv shows as good as they can be.

And it was his way of saying, you know, we need nerds in the room we need writers and that this sort of DC renaissance, this DC revolution, is going to be very much a storytelling, it’s story first, we want to tell fantastic stories. That is where we are starting, stopping.”

The channel appears to have abruptly made the clip a ‘private video’ and thus I cannot confirm the quote at this time even as several outlets have attributed it as being correct. Warners has not made any announcement as yet and Gunn himself has not yet commented on the report – should he do so this article will be updated to include that.

King wrote the comic book “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” with one of the projects on the DC film & TV slate going by the same name which would suggest that’s the one King’s involved in.

“Superman: Legacy” is the only film from the slate to have a set release date and is scheduled to hit cinemas on July 11th 2025.

The talk comes as Warner Bros. Discovery has remastered Max Fleischer’s original animated “Superman” short film series with plans to release them digitally on HD and Blu-ray on May 16th.

Titled “Max Fleischer’s Superman 1941-1943,” all seventeen shorts have been remastered from the original 35mm source elements of the film. In addition three featurettes are being made about their creation.
