DC Studios chief James Gunn has shot down a recent social media rumor suggesting he was “very close” to landing an actor to play the last son of Krypton for his upcoming DC Comics adaptation “Superman: Legacy”.

The report seems to have originated from YouTube’s Beyond the Trailer host Grace Randolph who tweeted the role was “very very close” and “MIGHT even be cast or in final talks”.

Gunn, who routinely shoots down online reports about casting and cameos, denied the claim and offered an update on his Superman casting process. Gunn responded on Twitter: “Not true. Haven’t had a single talk with a single actor about the role. Just making private lists, prepping material for auditions.”

Randolph then took Gunn’s rebuttal and responded that she hears “Percy Jackson” and “Hunters” star Logan Lerman was Gunn’s top choice for Superman. Gunn shot that down too saying: “For the record, I don’t know who that is.”

When someone else explained who he was, Gunn responded: “Guys, this isn’t a dig at the actor. I don’t know lots of actors’ names. Now that you tell me who he is, I recognize him from stuff and think he’s talented. But I’ve never met him, and he’s never been part of a conversation about playing Superman… It’s certainly not any fault on the part of the actor if I don’t know their name.”

Gunn is writing and directing “Superman: Legacy,” which marks the first full feature in his DC Universe overhaul.

The film tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. A man guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

Gunn’s Superman is expected to skew younger than past incarnations, which is one reason why Henry Cavill is no longer playing the superhero. That said, Gunn isn’t mandating the actor be in his 20s as some previous reports have suggested.

“Superman: Legacy” is scheduled to open in cinemas on July 11th 2025.
