DC Studios chief James Gunn has clarified some recent comments he made regarding some DC films prior to the brand’s relaunch under his purview.
Specifically, he was chatting with Den of Geek about his new DC Universe’s continuity and confirmed that both “Black Adam” and “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” are not canon to the new DCU, including the appearances of characters from his “Peacemaker” series.
In his comments, he says: “They’re not canon! I hate it!”. Though referring to the “Peacemaker” cameo appearances in those films, some took this to mean that Gunn was saying he hated both films overall. He has now clarified the matter on Threads:
“This is the kind of nonsense you have to look out for in these posts. I never said I hated either of those films – I said I didn’t like the way the 11th Street Kids were included, as I don’t think Harcourt was ever the warden of an underwater prison, and I don’t think Waller had anything to do with the Justice Society.”
Gunn also clarified that while the new season does deal with two different dimensions, it won’t be the case of a Snyder’s DCEU/Gunn’s DCU split. He tells Rolling Stone:
“People are realizing that Peacemaker Season 2 is about two dimensions, and that’s really the core of the show. But it’s not as if one of these is old DCEU and one’s DCU. That’s dealt with in a different way, very upfront in a season where most everything in Season 1 is canon and some things are not.
I did a podcast with [actors] Steve Agee and Jen Holland. And we did every episode of Peacemaker, and in those episodes, I talk about what’s canon and what’s not. I basically chip off little things from Peacemaker Season 1 that aren’t canon, like Aquaman. But most of the stuff is canon.”
Gunn is expected to put in an appearance at Comic-Con this weekend with the second season of “Peacemaker” set to be one of the biggest panels at the entire convention. The new episodes themselves premiere starting August 21st on HBO and HBO Max.
