In a rare event, Netflix is set to give Guillermo del Toro’s passion project “Frankenstein” a theatrical release.
The streaming giant announced on Monday that the film will receive a limited release in cinemas starting October 17th, the release coming ahead of its Netflix global premiere on November 7th.
Del Toro previously hinted at such a release in past interviews, and by streaming standards, a window of three weeks is fairly considerable.
The film is set in Eastern Europe in the 19th Century and tells the story of Dr. Pretorious (Christoph Waltz) who needs to track down a monster (Elordi) – believed to have died in a fire 40 years before – in order to continue the experiments of its creator – Dr. Victor Frankenstein (Isaac).
Frankenstein was a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brought the creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately led to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.
Mia Goth plays Victor’s fiancée Elizabeth Lavenza, while Lars Mikkelsen, Ralph Ineson, David Bradley, Felix Kammerer and Charles Dance also star.
The film will hold its North American premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival next month.
