“Guardians Vol. 3” Has Small Box-Office Drop

Marvel

The final actual domestic box-office figures for the weekend have arrived and Marvel Studios’ “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” managed to defy expectations.

The film ended up making $62.6 million this weekend, beating original $60.5 million estimates. In fact, as a result – the film’s second-week drop officially sits at just 47%. That’s a far better drop than the first two ‘Guardians’ which both fell 55% in their second weekends.

In fact, it’s the second-best drop in MCU history, beaten only by the first “Black Panther” (44.7%) and on par with the first “Thor” (47.2%). It also marks a reversal of fortune for Marvel, who has seen many of ts most recent MCU films suffer steep drops in their second weekends.

Worldwide the film now sits at $530.9 million and eyes turn towards the question as to whether the film can pass the first film’s lifetime gross of $773.3 million or the second’s $863.7 million.

There’s a good chance it will, though the film is about to face stiff competition shortly in the form of both “Fast X” opening this Friday and “The Little Mermaid” set to open next week.

The final box-office tally was less rosy this weekend for Robert Rodriguez’s $65 million budget twisty sci-fi thriller “Hypnotic” which ended up pulling in just $2.35 million in its debut – instantly making it one of the most high-profile box office bombs of 2023.
