Marvel Studios’ “Guardians of the Galaxy” surpassed expectations in its opening night last night, the film nabbing $11.2 million in Thursday night previews.
That makes it the biggest Thursday evening start for a movie in 2014, ahead of the $10.2 million Marvel’s Thursday night previews of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” nabbed.
‘Soldier’ went on to nab $96.2 million for the weekend. Right now it’s not sure how much ‘Guardians’ will earn, but it’s certain to beat the previous August opening weekend record of $69.2 million held by “The Bourne Ultimatum”.
One theatre it won’t be getting revenue from though is a Regal cinema in New Jersey where a screening last night for the movie began playing the wrong movie – 2012’s “Rise of the Guardians” according to CBM. Movie-goers reported to staff that the wrong film was on display and staff tried a further two times to get the real ‘Guardians’ to play. It didn’t happen.
