Guadagnino To Helm BBC’s “Brideshead Revisited”

“Call Me By Your Name” and “Suspiria” helmer Luca Guadagnino has been announced as writer and director of the latest mini-series version of Evelyn Waugh’s classic novel “Brideshead Revisited” – this one for The BBC with production kicking off next year.

Mammoth Screen (“Parade’s End”) and Moonage Pictures (“The Pursuit of Love”) are backing the new take with a report in The Daily Mail suggesting Andrew Garfield, Ralph Fiennes, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara and Joe Alwyn had been cast in key roles – though Deadline says that talk is premature.

The story deals with Captain Charles Ryder and his relationships with aristocratic family, the Flytes, who live in the palatial Brideshead Castle. It tackles themes of aristocratic nostalgia, Catholicism, and homosexuality as Charles gets involved first with an intimate friendship with Sebastian and then later in a romance with his sister Julia.

The property was adapted for TV in 1981 with Jeremy Irons as Ryder, while Matthew Goode took on the role in the 2008 film version. Guadagnino’s most recent series “We Are Who We Are” has been picked up by BBC Three in the UK.
