“Call Me By Your Name” and “Challengers” director Luca Guadagnino is in final negotiations to direct a new film adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial 1991 novel “American Psycho” at Lionsgate.
Scott Z. Burns is writing the script for the project which will be a whole new take on the novel, rather than a remake of the Mary Herron’s 2000 film adaptation which starred Christian Bale.
The book centers on wealthy, narcissistic and vain young Manhattan investment banker named Patrick Bateman who lives a double life as a serial killer.
The work garnered notoriety for its graphic violence, leading it to be censored in multiple countries. The previous film adaptation grossed over $34 million on a $7 million budget and developed a cult following.
The news comes ahead of the theatrical release of Guadagnino’s “Queer” starring Daniel Craig which will hit cinemas via A24 on November 27th. Guadagnino is currently in post-production on “After the Hunt” starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield.
Frenesy Films will produce the new adaptation and Sam Pressman is executive producing.
