Frank Grillo has become a familiar face on the action genre front in the past decade, from “The Purge” to “Captain America” to numerous direct to streaming titles, and is also seen as an accomplished actor for his work in shows like “Kingdom” and films like “The Grey”.
Recently, he spoke with Uproxx and revealed the toll that all of these action sequences are taking on his now 55-year-old body. He still trains every day with a boxing trainer and does strength training, but admits filming action films is stressful because of the mental toll it takes:
“When you’re making a movie where you have a lot of things going on and have a lot of choreography to remember, you do it over and over and over. Your mind gets worn down as well as your body, and you’re exhausted all the time.”
Grillo’s probably most familiar for his role as Crossbones in the Marvel cinematic universe, but in the past he has also expressed a desire to portray Frank Castle aka The Punisher. In the new interview though, he says his priorities have since shifted to more non-superhero projects with limited budgets and more creative control:
“That’s not in my trajectory now. It’s not where my life is taking me anymore, and my friend Jonny Bernthal did an amazing job. My life and what I want to do is much different now, and I think I’m outgrowing that whole kind-of Marvel and superhero thing.
Joe [Carnahan] and I have a really good little company in War Party, and we’re concentrating on action thrillers that are responsibly budgeted, and we’re very busy, knock wood, and we’ll go down the path of creating our own material and content and having a good time.”
Frank Castle hasn’t yet appeared in the MCU, though there have been theories of his inclusion in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” as the driver of the van that rams some Hydra agents and saves Nick Fury.
Grillo can be seen in this season of Showtime’s “Billions”.
