“Gremlins 3” Script Awaits Spielberg Approval?

Warner Bros. Pictures

Zach Galligan, the lead of the original 1984 “Gremlins” film and its 1990 sequel “Gremlins 2: The New Batch,” says that a third feature in the series appears to finally have some heat behind it.

Appearing at Comic-Con Manchester recently, Galligan revealed that thanks to the box-office success of another long-gestating sequel of an iconic 1980s dark comedy from Warner Brothers, the studio is looking into a third movie again:

“After 35 years, they’ve come up with a script. Warner Bros. is incredibly interested in doing it, apparently it’s waiting on Mr. Spielberg to read it and approve it. But you can thank the success of ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.'”

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” released last year to a $452 million worldwide box office haul from a cost-conscious budget – overcoming mixed reviews in the process.

The studio has not responded to trade requests for further information, most notably who has penned the script for “Gremlins 3”.

Warner Bros. Pictures co-chief Pam Abdy did indicate back in April the studio was working with Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment on “developing new entries in the ‘Gremlins’ and ‘Goonies’ franchises” with Potsy Ponciroli hired to pen “Goonies 2”, which Spielberg will produce.

“Gremlins” has been the subject of video games and a recent HBO Max animated series on which Galligan had a recurring guest voice role.

A recent screening of “Gremlins 2” made headlines when the part at which the film stock burns in the movie (resulting in Gremlin silhouettes on screen) the actual projectionist used puppets to pretend the Gremlins had taken control of his booth.
